How it all began

The Widget Championship was created by Paul Stone and Fred Button on Boxing Day in 2002. It started out as a quiet evening until the two lads decided to cut in half an old bitter can and take out the contents. The contents being of course the infamous WIDGET, which looks like a ping pong ball but just a little heavier. After a while of using breadsticks as cues to knock the ball to one another, the pair decided to add another component to their game. They selected 2 pairs of salt and pepper shakers which they put at either end of the table to use as two sets of goals. Next, they took it in turns to have alternate shots at the goals to see who could score the most.

The first Championship was originally only played by Paul and Fred to pass the time while the respected others were in the kitchen cooking. The second year the boys opened up the competition to the other members of the family. At the end of the first tournament it was decided that this was going to be a yearly occurance to occur on Boxing Day. A little trophy was made and the full Championship was then born!
